A small neighborhood bakery in Oregon is proving that trust can still be one of the most powerful ingredients in business.
For Wendy House, baking has always been deeply personal. Inspired by her German baker grandmother, she spent years perfecting recipes and sharing homemade bread and pastries with family and friends. Though many encouraged her to turn her passion into a business, the idea of owning a bakery never seemed like the right fit.
After years working as a pharmacist while raising four sons with her husband, House found herself entering a new chapter of life as her children grew older. During a routine trip to Costco, she spotted a greenhouse that sparked an unexpected idea — what if she created a small self-serve bakery right from her driveway?
That simple vision became Little House Bread Co., an honor system micro bakery that has since captured the hearts of customers both locally and online. What began with a few sourdough loaves inside a tiny greenhouse has now expanded into a thriving home bakery offering fresh baked breads, cinnamon rolls, pastries, and specialty sourdough creations.
Unlike a traditional bakery, there is no cashier or checkout counter. Customers simply select their items, calculate their total, and leave payment on the honor system. While some initially questioned whether strangers could truly be trusted, House says the overwhelming honesty and kindness from customers has been one of the most rewarding parts of the experience.
Over time, visitors began traveling from neighboring towns and even hours away to purchase her baked goods. The success of the bakery also inspired House and her family to create a website helping people locate other micro bakeries in their communities.
Beyond the bread itself, House believes the growing micro bakery movement represents something larger, an opportunity for stay-at-home parents and aspiring entrepreneurs to create flexible income while building meaningful connections within their neighborhoods. She frequently encourages home bakers to explore cottage food laws in their states and pursue their passions without fear.
For House, the bakery has become more than a business. It is a reflection of family, trust, community, and purpose. What started as a small idea inside a greenhouse has grown into a powerful reminder that sometimes the simplest concepts can create the greatest impact.
